WHEREAS, Parkinson's is a neurological-debilitating disease that can be treated but not cured. It causes tremors in the arms, hands, and legs, muscular rigidity, slowness of movement, difficulty speaking and swallowing, depression, and a list of other symptoms; and
WHEREAS, Parkinson's Awareness Month is April 2026 and brings into focus its life-changing effects; and
WHEREAS, Parkinson's Society Nova Scotia is a non-profit society and is comprised of a dedicated group of volunteers whose mandate is to provide education, advocacy, research and support to all Parkinson's patients, caregivers, and families.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Mayor Greg Henley, on behalf of the Town of Oxford Council, do hereby proclaim April 2026 as "Parkinson's Awareness Month" in the Town of Oxford.

WHEREAS, it is estimated that 1 in 66 people across the country are Autistic/have autism, and 1 in 32 people - approximately 30,000 individuals - in Nova Scotia are Autistic/have autism; and
WHEREAS, many dedicated Autistic individuals/people with autism, parents, teachers, researchers, and professionals, including those at Autism Nova Scotia and other community-based organizations, work tirelessly throughout our province to make the communities where we live accessible and inclusive for Autistics/individuals with autism, and their loved ones; and
WHEREAS, with 11 locations throughout the province and with the support of the autism community, Autism Nova Scotia builds understanding, acceptance, and inclusion for Autistics/individuals on the autism spectrum and their families through leadership, advocacy, education, training, and programming across the lifespan; and
WHEREAS, this month of April marks Autism Acceptance Month, and Thursday, April 2nd , marked World Autism Acceptance Day, when people across the globe came together as a community to celebrate autism and promote acceptance and inclusion.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, I, Mayor Greg Henley, on behalf of the Town of Oxford Council do hereby proclaim April 2026 as Autism Acceptance Month throughout the Town of Oxford and encourage all our residents and visitors to recognize the Autistic individuals/people with autism, family members, caregivers,
educators, and other professionals who strive to make Nova Scotia an inclusive and accessible place for us all to call home.

WHEREAS 59% of Canadian children and 96% of adults have experienced cavities, and 21 % of Canadian adults have experienced periodontal (gum) issues.
And WHEREAS research shows a direct link between oral health and overall health and well-being, such as periodontal disease being linked to several serious illnesses, including lung disease, diabetes, and heart disease.
AND WHEREAS oral health issues are easily preventable and treatable, and Canadians, especially children and seniors, can be greatly assisted through early detection and intervention.
AND WHEREAS dental hygiene is the 6th largest registered health profession in Canada, with more than 31,000 registered dental hygienists working in a variety of settings. with people of all ages. addressing issues related to oral health.
AND WHEREAS greater awareness of proper oral health practices and the need to regularly visit a dental professional is paramount to ensuring Canadians lead healthier and happier lives.
AND WHEREAS promoting the importance of the issues and celebrating the successes of the profession and contributions of dental hygienists will lead to increased public awareness.
Now Therefore, I Mayor Greg Henley, on behalf of the Town of Oxford Council, do hereby proclaim the week of April 4-10, 2026, as:

Whereas Purple Day is a global effort dedicated to promoting epilepsy awareness in countries around the world, and
Whereas epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions, estimated to affect over 50 million people worldwide, and 42 people in Canada are diagnosed every day, and
Whereas one in ten persons will have at least one seizure during his or her lifetime, and
Whereas the public is often unable to recognize common seizure types, or how to respond with appropriate first aid, and
Whereas Purple Day will be celebrated on March 26 annually to increase understanding, reduce stigma, and improve the quality of life for people with epilepsy throughout the country and globally.
Now, therefore, I, Mayor Greg Henley, on behalf of the Town of Oxford, do hereby proclaim March 26, 2026, "Purple Day", in an effort to raise awareness of epilepsy in Canada.

The Town of Oxford Mayor, CAO and Council would like to extend their appreciation today on this Employee Appreciation Day to all of the hard-working Town of Oxford staff from the office to the Public Works team.

Public Works Operator/Labourer Position – CASUAL

The Town has a vacancy in the Public Works Department for an Operator/Labourer in a casual position (occasional, as needed, day-to-day basis). The position reports directly to the Public Works Supervisor and is responsible to perform duties related to the operation and maintenance of the Town’s water utility, wastewater, infrastructure, general operations, and winter maintenance. Experience as an operator as well as within the municipal government environment is preferred.
The successful candidate must have a Grade 12 diploma or equivalency, a valid class 5 drivers’ licence with air brake endorsement, some heavy equipment experience, be physically able to do manual labour as required, and work well within a team environment. The normal work week is from Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, with some overtime or call out required. This is a non-unionized position and is subject to all Provincial and Municipal Occupational Health and Safety rules and regulations. Based on experience, skills, and education the wage range is between $20.76 - $21.49 per hour.

Since it began in 2015, Heritage Day has recognized a different honouree each year – a person, place or event that highlights an important aspect of Nova Scotia’s history. The honouree for 2026 is Joseph Willie Comeau.

Senator Joseph Willie Comeau
Joseph Willie Comeau (1876–1966) devoted his life to public service and to strengthening Acadian life in Nova Scotia. Raised in Digby County and educated at Collège Sainte-Anne, he worked across education, business, and politics, guided by a deep commitment to community, culture, and service.
Over nearly five decades in the Nova Scotia Legislature and the Senate of Canada, he consistently used his voice to support Acadian language, education, and cultural expression, earning lasting respect for his leadership and integrity.

Sénateur Joseph Willie Comeau
Joseph Willie Comeau (1876-1966) a consacré sa vie au service public et à l’essor de la communauté acadienne en Nouvelle-Écosse.
